In the age of thinking about being more conscious about what we put on our skin and how it affects the environment, two beauty trends have emerged and it looks like they are here to stay. It’s safe to say that clean beauty and vegan beauty are becoming more and more accessible regarding affordability and availability. According to Mintel, between 2014 and 2019 there was a 69% growth in new products launched with free-from, ethical, and environmental, or natural claims in beauty and personal care.
So, What is Clean Beauty?
It’s a little confusing but Clean Beauty is actually something that can’t really be defined even since its arrival in around 2010. Clean Beauty is something that each retailer defines through their own standards; for example, Sephora’s clean beauty standards are different than Ulta’s clean beauty standards. This is because both of their “free-from” lists include different ingredients based on the research they’ve done. However, to put it simply clean beauty is a standard created by each retailer that includes products created without certain unnatural/toxic ingredients.
Sephora’s Clean Beauty Standard:
“Our program continues to grow and evolve, as innovation is key to finding and developing new ingredients that fit our standards. All brands qualifying for the Clean seal are formulated without these ingredients and more: parabens, phthalates, formaldehydes and formaldehyde-releasers, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, and triclosan.”
Ulta’s Clean Beauty Standard:
“As with the beginning of any journey, we are committed to evolving the “Made Without List”, listening to and learning from experts and our brand partners to make informed changes to the list over time.
The “Made Without List” includes: Ethyl methacrylate; Methyl methacrylate, Aluminum salts, Benzophenone-1, Benzophenone-2, Butoxyethanol, Butylated Hydroxyanisole, Parabens, Talc, Hydroquinone and More.”

What is Vegan Beauty?
Vegan Beauty standards are the same in regards to Vegan Food. In order to be a Vegan beauty product this means that it is made with no animal-based ingredients whatsoever. Some of the common animal-based ingredients put in some non-vegan products include honey, beeswax, and milk from mammals. Moreover, you would think that if a beauty product is vegan then it must mean that it is cruelty-free but this isn’t necessarily the case. A product can still be Vegan, free-from animal-based ingredients, yet still conduct animal-testing. So, if you are looking for a product that is Vegan and Cruelty-free then make sure you look for both of those claims on the packaging.
